Big 5 Berlin Marathon

Big sports events need sponsorship to be able to attract world-class athletes. The Berlin Marathon is thus officially known as the 'Real Berlin Marathon', named after the German supermarket chain. In its inaugural year in 1974, just 286 enthusiastic runners lined up for the start. Since then, the race has become steadily more popular, with some 30,000 competitors reaching the finishing line in 2002 including thousands in wheelchairs and on rollerblades. The Berlin Marathon is regarded as one of the world's fastest marathons, with world records being set on a regular basis.
