Fourth Saturday College Football 2009

Top-rated Florida finished its "preseason" undefeated and unchallenged. Now, it"s Tennessee time.

Tim Tebow threw four touchdown passes, ran for a score and the Gators beat Troy 56-6 Saturday in their final tune-up before beginning Southeastern Conference play next weekend vs. Tennessee.

The biggest negative for Florida was six fumbles (three lost) on a sloppy day.

No. 4 Alabama 40, Florida International 14 — Greg McElroy completed a school-record 14 straight passes, freshman Trent Richardson rushed for a pair of second-half touchdowns and the Crimson Tide pulled away after a slow start. The Crimson Tide couldn"t shake the 33-point underdog Golden Panthers until Richardson scored from 9 and 35 yards in the final 19 minutes.

No. 9 Brigham Young 54, Tulane 3 — Max Hall threw two touchdown passes and Bryan Kariya scored twice to help the Cougars romp on the road after a sluggish start following its upset of Oklahoma, managing only two field goals by Mitch Payne in the first quarter. But BYU then turned it on and finished with 527 yards total offense.

No. 10 California 59, Eastern Washington 7 — Jahvid Best rushed for 144 yards and scored two touchdowns as the Bears rolled at home. He caught a 22-yard touchdown pass from Kevin Riley in the first half and scored on a 1-yard run in the third quarter. Riley also ran for a touchdown and Shane Vareen had three short TD runs as Cal posted its second straight blowout to open the season.

No. 11 LSU 23, Vanderbilt 9 — Keiland Williams rushed for 72 yards and Louisiana State"s two touchdowns as the Tigers won. The visiting Commodores trailed by only one TD midway through the fourth quarter.

No. 12 Boise State 48, Miami (Ohio) 0 — Kellen Moore threw for 307 yards and four touchdowns as the Broncos cruised at home.

No. 14 Virginia Tech 52, Marshall 10 — Freshman Ryan Williams ran for 164 yards and three touchdowns as the Hokies more than tripled their offensive production from a week earlier en route to romping at home. Tech managed only 155 yards in losing to Alabama, but that tally was topped before the end of the first quarter against the Thundering Herd.

No. 16 Texas Christian 30, Virginia 14 — Visiting TCU held Virginia"s new spread offense to seven first downs, and the Horned Frogs breezed to a victory in their season opener. Joseph Turner and Jeremy Kerley had TD runs for TCU, and Andy Dalton threw a 31-yard scoring pass to Jimmy Young. Ross Evans kicked three field goals.

No. 19 North Carolina 12, Connecticut 10 — The Huskies" Dan Ryan was called for holding in the end zone with 1:32 left in the game and the score tied 10-10, giving the visiting Tar Heels a safety and a victory after trailing 10-0 entering the fourth quarter.

No. 21 Georgia 41, South Carolina 37 — Rennie Curran broke up a fourth-down pass at the goal line as the Bulldogs held on to win at home in a wild game. The nearly four-hour contest wasn"t decided until Curran, a linebacker, batted down Stephen Garcia"s final throw on a fourth-and-4 play at the Georgia 7 with 27 seconds remaining.

No. 23 Cincinnati 70, SEMO 3 — Mardy Gilyard scored four touchdowns as part of the third-best scoring performance, reaching the end zone on an electrifying punt return, a run and two catches in leading the Bearcats to a shellacking of visiting Southeast Missouri State.
