There are many interesting facts surrounding the famous Kentucky Derby. In the year 1995, D.Wayne Lukas won the title with two different horses. He also won the other world famous Derby in the same fashion. The Kentucky Derby is the oldest continuous sporting event that takes place in United States.

 One of the saddest incidents in the Kentucky Derby was that the horse named Eight Belles died in the Kentucky Derby. This was the first incident of the Derby in which any horse that participated died.  It happened when she was at the finishing line and she fell down and broke both of her ankles. She was immediately given aid but she could not survive. Churchill Downs then decided to plant a magnolia tree in the garden of Kentucky Derby Museum. The remains of Eight Belles will be kept at the base of the tree.  There was a ceremony which took place in her memory in the year 2009.

In the year 2009 the winner of the Derby, Big Brown did not wore the blanket of the roses as he hated flowers. Kent Desormeaux did not allow the Winner circle’s handler to place the blanket of roses to the horse as he did not want to upset his horse.
